Hobbies = Family Fun

I’ve been working in the office most of today but just spent the last hour talking to customers at our Fountain Valley Hobby People store. Lots of families are coming in looking for activities to do together. I love it.

One couple with their 3 kids just bought some kites for the windy day, and 2 beginner Revell plastic models if it turns rainy. This is their 1st experience in a Hobby People store, and they said they would be back, especially after dad spent 15 minutes on the Great Planes Flight Simulator. It was fun to watch the parents and the kids searching the store and finding great treasures. The kids, aged 5 & 9, wanted radio control of course, I suggested starting with plastics as great entry into the hobby. The parents liked that idea as they were trying to stay on budget and were able to meet their goals of family activities without breaking the bank.

A father and son came in looking for RC cars to race against each other. This was a weekend of family time and staying close to home, and Jim, (the father) had a friend who had a Traxxas Jato and loved taking it out with his son, so Jim and his son came to check it out for themselves. They left with a XTM Electric X-cellerator and a Traxxas Rustler.

Over the hour I saw so many families that when I walked back to my office I had a smile a mile wide. When i think of RC or hobbies, I think of family time and home time. In RC, there is always an ebb and flow of kids, and i am happy to see the flow returning. While we try to make our stores and our hobby fun and exciting, what makes it most rewarding is seeing our customers and their families coming in and sharing their experiences. And now, I will head home and spend some time racing RC cars with my kids, and enjoying great family time.

Memorial Day

I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend. Whether you are traveling, or staying home, this is a great weekend to appreciate some great times with your family and friends. So enjoy!

For those who are staying home, I hope you find some time to enjoy the hobby. My sons and daughters are setting up a mini track at the local elementary school and are going to race our XTM Rages. We have 3 all set up and ready to go. I have been promising my kids for the last 2 months we would have race day, so we are all fired up to do some racing. My wife has signed on to compete which should be a riot as well.

Update

Here’s an update, the response to the T28 has been unbelievable, it seems like this special is making a lot of modelers very happy. We have blown through about 1/3 of our shipment so far, with about 48 hours to go. Thank you for the modelers who posted their thoughts about modeling over the summer. I really appreciate the comments. It is always amazing to me to get feedback as it makes the blog much more interactive. That, and meeting our customers in the store, as I did this past week. Knowing that the products we support are meaningful and making our customer successful is rewarding, and makes the Hobby People team work even harder to find new products throughout the world.

I am planning a trip to Asia the first week in June, and I will be attending the Shanghai RC show during that time. I expect to find some very cool items that will soon be at the tracks and flying fields later in the year.
